The Graces by Laure Eve Review

Publisher: Faber and Faber (1st September 2016)

Everyone said the Graces were witches.
They moved through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their wake. Stares followed their backs and their hair.
They had friends, but they were just distractions. They were waiting for someone different.
All I had to do was show them that person was me.
Like everyone else in her town, River is obsessed with the Graces, attracted by their glamour and apparent ability to weave magic. But are they really what they seem? And are they more dangerous than they let on? (Publishers' Blurb)

From the moment I read the premise of this book, I knew I had to have it. I've always loved the idea of witches and the danger of using magic to solve problems. The premise reminded me a little of 'The Craft', which was one of my favourite movies growing up. In this book, I was intrigued by the beautiful, mysterious witches and the girl who wants to be one of them. Luckily, it's as brilliant as it sounds.

My favourite thing was the writing style. It was so beautiful and lyrical, which really suited the magical plot. The voice was very strong and authentic and I loved how the narrator wasn't always the good girl who did the right thing.

I also loved how tightly plotted this was. The stakes were constantly raising and there was a strong sense of building conflict. There were times that I guessed where this was going but other aspects of the plot took me by complete surprise.

The Graces were also brilliant characters. They seemed as distant and inaccessible as movie stars, yet each possessing unique qualities that made them feel very real.

I'm really looking forward to the second book in this series and I want more books about modern day witches!
